Dracaena marginata

The Dracaena marginata has beautiful dark leaves with a subtle red edge. There are 120 different types of Dracaena, some of which produce blood-red resin. That is why it is also called dragon tree or dragon blood tree. Dracaenas mainly originate from Africa, but species also occur in Asia and Central America. “Deremensis” is a synonym for the species name “Fragrans”. It has this name because of the very strong scented flowers it produces. However this almost never happens at home! The deremensis occurs naturally throughout tropical Africa, but is grown for us in Costa Rica. This is done by cutting off a piece of large Dracaena. New roots will grow again on the sawn-off piece. From there, the plants come to the Netherlands in sea containers. This way the plants do not have to spend as long in the heated greenhouse here: they do not need heating in Costa Rica! This way we use as little energy as possible to grow this beautiful tropical plant.

Unique properties of this plant

A Dracaena is very easy to take care of, because it can easily go without water for a while. So a perfect plant for someone who is often away from home, or for the student who wants some greenery, but doesn’t want to be too busy taking care of it.

This Dracaena is also one of the plants that can purify the air in the house! This means that it does not only convert CO2 into oxygen, but also removes all kinds of harmful substances from the air. Perfect for houses in the city and for houses with little ventilation!
